by kai on 31/10/2006

Kevin Airgid, who is a regular speaker at Flash in the Can, has made his eBook Web Designers Success Guide available for free on his website. The book is sponsored by Flash in the Can now. Cool stuff and interesting and good to read!

UPDATE: The download link on his website apparently currently doesn't work. Get the book from the FITC site instead: http://www.fitc.ca/downloads/wdsg_fitc.pdf

Java and open source

by kai on 27/10/2006

Finally the Java open source movement got another push. Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's CEO, announced that the Java Platform (the standard edition to be more precise) would be open-sourced within the next 30 to 60 days. That's very good, although it would probably not make a huge difference in regards to how people use Java right now. But an open-sourcing would allow people to enhance their…

Flex 2 Effects Explorer 0.1

by kai on 25/10/2006

My colleague and friend David Keutgens built a Flex 2 Effects Explorer application - following its "big brother" Flex 2 Style Explorer. Please note that I don't have to do anything with it (not yet ;) but just provide the information and the download (to give the tool a good headstart). We actually have no idea if someone developed such as thing before or if someone could use it at all, but here…

Adobe Digitals Edition (beta)

by kai on 25/10/2006

Adobe released a pretty cool new product on Labs: Adobe Digitals Edition (beta). Pretty bluntly said: It's an ebook reader - but it's an ebook reader on steroids as it manages your ebooks, as it has a small footprint (2.5 mb download) and as it is a Rich Internet Application running in the Flash Player resp. as an add-in to the Flash Player 9 (I assume this is done similar to how the Breeze…

Faking a currency numeric stepper in Flex 2

by kai on 23/10/2006

I was building a Flex 2 prototype for a customer just recently. Part of this prototype application were several forms to juggle with money amounts in NZ$ - a good opportunity to use a numeric stepper you might think. Obviously, when dealing with money values in an application, you would like to have a currency symbol in the NumericStepper. When we were trying to achieve this effect, various…

Events Nov 06: Munich and Auckland

by kai on 21/10/2006

Two more (interesting) events: The first one is about tools called Fusion Debug and Fusion Reactor. Both are very valuable tools for any CF developer and people operating their own server(s). Charlie Arehat is going to deliver a one day class "Fusion Debug/Fusion Reactor Fast Track" at the Adobe offices in Munich on November 3rd. Costs are moderate (325 Euros) and each attendee gets 1 license of…

MAX Korea 2006

by kai on 21/10/2006

But saying that (in my last entry) - I will have a chance to visit Asia around mid-November. Adobe invited me to come over to Seoul in Korea and talk about Flex during their MAX Korea 2006 conference. Actually, I'm pretty excited - this will be my first trip to Asia (besides being in airports and changing planes on my way to either Australia or New Zealand) - should be very interesting! I'm going…

No MAX today...

by kai on 21/10/2006

Also - I'm not going to be at MAX conference this year. Basically the reason is that my employer didn't want to fund parts of my trip. That's pretty sad, but on the other hand I do see the reasoning behind it (somehow). Anyway, have fun over there in Vegas!

Back again

by kai on 21/10/2006

Well, some people might have noticed that I haven't been writing for nearly 3 months now - sorry for that. It's pretty hard to provide a particular reason for that fact, there was just a lot going on lately, various things to do etc, you know... New Zealand is still treating us well, particularly now as we're heading towards summer, yoo-hoo...
