Flash Player 7 Linux…

by kai on 06/06/2004

Macromedia released the Flash Player 7 for Linux some days ago. Great, another step into the direction of creating a platform independent virtual machine for our well-known and loved Rich Internet Applications.

But: To be honest – are there so many people really working on a Linux-based client machine? Is that going to become a real trend or is it just another IT-world hype like Java Applets, Web Services etc…?

Don’t get me wrong, I really appreciate that they support the Linux platform, but in my opinion there are more important things to do with the Flash Player besides delivering a Linux version – and it not delivering a Flash Player 8 what I’m talking about. It’s the mobile world:

– Flash Player 7 for Pocket PC 2002/2003 (still on version 6 and sloooooooooooooooowww…)
– Flash Player 7 for Palm-based PDAs (the best I heard of is a version 5 player on Sonys Clie)
– Flash Player 7 for Windows Mobile for Smatphones – no player at all – and we don’t talk about Flash light here…

Just my 0.02 EUR…

I think the answer to this question must be: why not support Linux? Macromedia advertises with Rich Internet Applications a platform independent application development. And with this entitlement they have to support Linux. And more Linux clients will come, not only like the public administration in Germany even worldwide there is a trend to use Linux. So before supporting PDA’s, Smartphone… there should be a support for Linux and maybe other Unix based systems. And of course I’m using Linux and a lot of web developers using Linux, that is the future market for Macromedia even in Flash development.

Sean, yes the did. They announced it just the day after a friend of mine odered a new Clie…;)

At all I still prefer the Windows Mobile plattform, with all their advantages and disadvantages. For someone into multimedia, connectivity, having fun etc. it seems to fit better than a Palm-based device. But they’re very popular in the US, aren’t they?

I heard Sony are discontinuing the Clie?
