Today I’ve got a pretty strange one. I was setting up my new laptop at work when suddenly during the installation of MSSQL 2000 server the error “A previous program installation created pending file operations on the installation machine. You must restart the computer before running setup” popped up. Well, I’ve deinstalled some software just before but obviously I’ve rebooted my machine. So, I’ve rebooted it again…and again…and again… until I found this technote:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312995
Steps 1 and 2 made it for me, but the stupid Windows always recreated the Pending… registry key. So – you might want to kill the key and don’t do a reboot after that – just install SQLServer immediately and you’re fine.
