Intelligent blog comment spam…

by kai on 28/10/2004

This is really unbelievable… I avoid spam to our blog comments now by using a mechanism of sending me an email containing the new comment. I have to allow each and every comment becoming visible in the blog by following a procedure which couldn’t be done by one of the spammers. Today I found the following comment in my inbox:

I will go at Macromedia MAX 2004 this November in beautiful New Orleans! It will be about presenting Java Powered ColdFusion, which will cialis explain how to leverage the strengths of both ColdFusion and Java to deliver a result that is so much more than the sum of its parts. I am excited about this topic.

Isn’t this amazing? They try to cover their spam bullshit by embedding it in content which might fit into the blogs context. The world “cialis” was surrounded by a link to a stupid spam site, which I removed above.

Thankfully, the comment spam that does follow that intelligent route only comes in 2 or 3, rather than a JesterXL Pill flood of comments caused by a bot or Perl script or whatever. Strength in #’s is the opposite… still, they’re all a bunch of losers. Death to spammers!!!

When I ran my blog with Movable Type, I was swamped by spam. I added the blacklist plugin and that at least made it possible to bulk delete stuff (it didn’t block as much spam as I’d hoped). So I added a hokey ‘human identity’ test using a number entry field (with the number broken up as multiple fonts / sizes / colors). That stopped all the automatic spam but a few persistent ‘humans’ still posted spam.

Then I switched to Ray’s Blog CFC and no automated spam has been posted and only a very small handful of human-posted spam so it’s easy enough to delete it quickly but some of them are very clever about how they word things…

Hi!

I want to extend my SQL knowledge.
I red so many SQL books and would like to
read more about SQL for my work as oracle database manager.

What can you recommend?

Thanks,
Werutz
