new phone: Nokia n93

by kai on 02/02/2007

I’ve got myself a new mobile the other week: it had to be the Nokia n93. It’s an awesome multimedia machine with a 3.2 MP camera, 3 x optical zoom, video close to DVD quality and WLAN. It runs s60 3rd edition and I really love it 😉

Pretty awesome is also that Nokia finally got the Outlook/Exchange sync right and it syncs way better than all the Nokia phones I used to have (6630, 8210, 6310i, 5110) and even better than my “old” SonyEricsson P910i which was supposed to be a “business” phone.

After now having dealt with all four major mobile operating systems at least on one phone, I have to admit that Symbian is still my favourite. It really seems that the people at the Symbian consortium have learned from the good old days of EPOC, s60 (and also UIQ) were rock-solid. I’ve also got various experiences with both PocketPC (& PPC PhoneEdition) and Windows Smartphones (both in slightly older versions, to admit) and as much as I think Microsoft has a great OS for PDAs, they just shouldn’t do phones. I know that a lot of people would not agree on this, but hey, that’s my personal point of view on things 😉

It perfectly seems to suit my needs: I’m too lazy to take an 8-25 MP cam with me to take pictures and I just do point&click photography anyway. I don’t need to carry 80 GB of music on my mp3 player, the phone with a 2 GB miniSD cards is absolutely fine, I have a 200 MB data plan to check emails/IM online – what else do I need?

Some software must-haves for s60 3rd Edition:

Adobe Flash Lite 2.1 (FL 1 comes pre-installed)
Papyrus (great calendar tool)
Mobipocket Reader

Why does it have to the the N93? Why not the N95?

The n95 seems to be very interesting, but it just isn’t available in New Zealand at this time. I could have gone for a parallel import or got one in Germany but then end up with warranty issues etc, so I thought I’d stick with what’s easily available down here.

I totally agree, the n95 _could_ be even better than the n93 – but as I said, the n93 suits all my current needs.
