Lynda or Total Training?

by kai on 17/10/2007

I’m currently looking into getting a subscription for one of the large online training services, Lynda.com or Total Training.

I’ve looked into both, tried out a few things, but it’s really hard to finally make up my mind. I also own DVDs from both companies and actually think they’re both doing a reasonably good job.

Any opinions or suggestions what to get? No, “subscribe to both” is not a valid answer, sorry 🙂

I tried both for a while and decided upon lynda.com in the end and have never looked back. Material is great, collection is huge and always growing. I found Total Training’s online experience to be kinda annoying compared to the simple interface for Lynda.com.

My only grip was the jump from $250 to $375 just to get the exercise material (files) that is way too much of a jump in my opinion. Other than that I’m loving my Lynda.com experience.

Hope this helps,
Regards,

Another option is VTC: http://www.vtc.com/ you can try the first three chapters of any training for free. I have a subscription to them from work, the quality depends on the topic.

If you’re thinking about using Lynda.com, get an O’reilly Safari subscription instead. There’s a lot of Lynda.com videos available in a Safari subscription for around $40/mo.

If you go with Lynda.com, google “lynda.com discount code” and try the some of the codes listed. I saved $100 on the premium membership by using one of the codes there.

We have a 20% discount promotion until end of April 2008 for monthly and yearly access to vtc.com – just go to the signup page on vtc.com and enter the promo code of vtcmv1
